Alice felt excitement pulsing through her. They were so close now. She could sense it. There was a fossil nearby. And not just any fossil: the one she had been searching for! Next to her, her father was digging with a pickaxe. Alice brushed at the dirt as he dug, trying to find the cool orange stone she knew was there.
Clink The axe struck something.
Her father smiled. "This is it," he said happily. "Pull it out, Alice!"
Alice obediently began to chip around at the rock with her chisel. As the dust fell away, a stunning orb of amber appeared.
"Old Amber!" her father nodded. "A rare find indeed!"
Alice reached out. The amber was strangely warm. She tugged, but it was stuck fast. She grabbed it with both hands, pulling at the fossil.
"Gently," her father warned.
With one last tug, Alice pulled the amber free. She stared at it, mesmorised.
Suddenly, the ground below their feet began to shudder. Debris fell from the ceiling.
"Cave in!" Alice's father cried. "Run!"
The pair ran for the tunnel they had come in by. Behind them, rocks as big as houses were falling into the cavern, closing it forever. Alice ran ahead of her father, the amber clutched tightly in her hand.
Suddenly Alice heard a cry from behind her. Her father had fallen! She ran back toward him. "No!" he screamed. "Run, Alice!"
"I can't!" Alice cried. Her father's foot was stuck under a rock. She tried to push it, but it was too heavy. Around her, the tunnel rumbled. Rocks fell from the ceiling. "Run!" her father yelled. "Run!" and then he was gone beneath the debris.
Alice ran, crying now. "Dad!" she yelled as she ran. The tunnels were a maze, she couldn't find a way out. But the rumbling had stopped now. She paused in a large cavern, gasping for breath.
All of a sudden, the amber in her hand glowed and cracked open. A powerful beast soared from the fossil. Its rows of saw-like teeth snapped hungrily. The Aerodactyl let out a roar which threatened to start up the rock slide again.
"No..." Alice whimpered. "Please... Dad...!" But the beast kept coming. Alice shut her eyes, too exhausted to run anymore. Waiting to feel the crush of the monster's teeth.
It's not real... a voice infiltrated Alice's thoughts. It's all in your head. Be still now.
Alice knew that she was dying. This was the end.
Be calm. You are not dying. It is just a dream.
Alice felt peace wash over her. Her father was gone. She would join him soon. It didn't matter.
You must wake up now. Open your eyes, Alice. Wake up... "We have to go!"
Alice bolted upright. She heard Meg's yell, but she knew that wasn't the reason for her waking. The others were around her. It was all a dream. She breathed deeply, trying to calm her heart.
"What's happening?" Alice called to Meg.
