And among many other reasons, the sprites were one reason I was very glad that Yellow was the very first version I got a hold of. It really surprised me at how awful the older sprites were, haha. Too bad the back sprites weren't cleaned up until Gold and Silver, though.
Eh, I don't see why being able to buy stones would be such a bad thing. Why can I only evolve one or two Pikachus into Raichus but I can evolve as many Pidgeys into Pidgeottos just because the evolution method is different?

And yeah, I kind of wish I started with Yellow also, because Blue was clunky-looking, but for it's time, it was easily one of the deepest Game Boy games around. But yeah, back sprites were so pixelated in the beginning. A lot of the attack animations also looked pretty lazy.
