Pokémon Crossroads #116-Slumber Town

It’s Tuesday which means it’s time for Crossroads Comics!

This week we’re taking a look at Slumber Town! Welcome to Slumber Town, a place of new opportunities and weird supernatural phenomena. For Romy, it is home to her new job, new friends, and potentially the cause of her forgotten memories. The socially anxious retriever quickly finds upon arriving in the town that she has a lot more questions than she does answers, especially regarding how and why she came to Slumber in the first place. While Romy tries to put her concerns aside, especially after seeing how accustomed to life in the town the rest of the residents are, Romy will eventually have to go on a quest with the help of her friends to uncover the mysteries of this sleepy little desert town in order to return home.

Slumber Town is a comic with a really interesting concept. At its core, the comic centers around Romy dealing with her social anxiety and the visuals do very well to convey that. One of my personal favorite parts of this comic is how it visually portrays the anxiety that Romy is feeling in certain situations. Take page 57 for instance, where we can both see what Echo is saying to Romy and how Romy’s anxiety is causing her to perceive it. In addition to the visual arrow pointing from Echo to Romy to indicate this perception, Romy is also substantially smaller than Echo in this panel to convey how small she feels in this moment as well. It’s just an excellent page overall and this is just one of several instances where Romy’s anxiety is conveyed in an amazing manner.

Another strong suit of this comic is its interesting characters. To fit with the mysterious setting, all of the characters are a bit of an enigma too, even the protagonist! Due to Romy’s missing memories, we only really know as much about her as she does, investing the readers into discovering her past and the circumstances behind her arrival in Slumber. The residents of Slumber also all appear to be mystifying characters too, from Echo’s mysterious past to Regina’s continually disappearing pearls to the unknown caller that keeps calling Romy. All in all it leaves a lot to discover and really amplifies the mysterious setting that Slumber has.

All in all, this is a comic that I really look forward to seeing update every week and I wanted to give it the shoutout it deserves. Y’all should check it out when you get the chance. You can find it on its website or stay notified of its updates on Twitter.
