Pokemon GO Map Updates, What To Expect

A long awaited update is coming to the map in Pokémon GO

After three years, a lot has changed. New buildings have been erected, old ones have been demolished. But nothing has been updated in Pokémon GO to account for these changes. Now is the time, because all those updates are finally coming. But what does this mean for the average player? Let’s dissect this and find out.

New Map Updates

Visual Changes

The Pokémon GO map will undergo a visual refresh to more accurately reflect the real world and how it’s changed since our last update. After this update, you may begin to see local changes from recent years appear on the map. This may include the removal of old roads or the appearance of newly constructed buildings.

New Gyms and PokéStops will show up around you to reflect the new real world changes. Subsequently any Gyms and PokéStops that represented structures that are no longer there, will disappear. This new change will also affect new parks that have been built in the last three years. Parks, if you didn’t know, are usually nests in Pokémon GO. That means that a certain Pokémon will spawn more frequently in that park. Each park is different and every couple of weeks, the spawns rotate to keep it fresh.

New Pokémon Spawn Points

Soon, different Pokémon will appear in even more places than before. In densely populated areas, this could mean that you’ll see the same numbers of Pokémon as before, but they’ll be spread out more evenly. You may also see Pokémon appear in different locations. For Trainers in rural or rapidly expanding areas, this may also increase the number of Pokémon that appear overall.

I’m sure you’ve noticed during your walks around your neighbour hood, that Pokémon will always spawn at specific spots. And sometimes those spots will spawn multiple Pokémon. Well it looks like Niantic has added new Spawn Points in order to spread out these cluster spawns.

For people who live on a cluster spawn point (*raises hand) you may see less Pokémon near you. However if there were long stretches of your area with no Spawn Points, you may see more Pokémon there. So this is really a give and take situation. This is also great news for rural players with limited Pokémon nearby, as new Spawn Points will add new opportunities to catch ’em all.

See you around, Genesect!
