Fantastic Fan Art: Welcome to Hoenn (Again)

This week on Fantastic Fan Art we are taking a completely different theme route and taking a glance at Hoenn now that Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire have been out a few weeks now. We’re going to dive into the scenery and the memorable moments from the game. Unfortunately I am way behind everyone and have not gotten a chance to finish it but that is okay! If you’re in my boat and don’t want to witness any spoilers then don’t check out this article! Revisit it after you’ve got a chance to see and enjoy everything.

Today we will start near the “end”. Presenting the one and only… Steven! Who doesn’t love this guy? Artist Kawacy definitely has a knack for faces and they’ve really captured the majestic beauty of Steven in this digital painting. I’d like to specifically draw attention to the folds of his clothing in this painting and how the artist depicts them with highlights and shadows. The style and painting methods gives the image plenty of depth and takes it from flat to full of life. As artists we have a lot to gain from putting in extra time when it comes to clothing so we can take something flat and bring it into the realm of lively. I’d also like to draw attention to the artist’s ability to highlight and shadow his trademark grey hair. It’s absolutely fantastic and I hope I am not the only one who wants to run my fingers through it!

What else was memorable about ORAS? Probably some of you would say that flying on Latios was! The above image is a tad chibi but since I don’t give that art style enough love I thought it was time to do so! This was done by DepiCorgi from deviantArt. Check out their page to learn a bit more about them personally and view their art. What I love about this image is the line art. It’s what I will call “un-perfect perfection”. The lines have a sketch like quality to them but they are clean and consistent. These lines are also used to give shading to the image in a simplistic and effective way. What do you think of this kawaii digital art?

Let’s finish off this segment with a take on the Hoenn starters. The above image is one of many in this art style by the deviantArt page PokemonFromHell. I will encourage readers to visit the page but be warned it’s a bit creepy ! The style essentially takes Pokemon and makes them eerie. Some appear a bit zombie like, others a bit ghost like and it’s worth a look. For now let’s just examine our Hoenn starters in this style. I’d like to point out the teeth that the artist created on the water starter! All three of them have fantastic teeth but Marshtomps are absolutely amazing. My speculation is that the artist completed their images and used a combination of tools – including erasers – to remove layers and create the teeth effect. Do you have another hypothesis on this? Let us know! Another aspect I enjoy about this style is the lack of defined outlines. We see pick out the lines of the individual Pokemon easily but they appear almost chaotic – as though the shapes of the Pokemon just happen to arise from some colours. This may not be the most mechanical explanation of the art but it’s fun to look at art holistically instead of through reductionist eyes on occasion.

That’s a wrap for this edition of FFA. Stay tuned for our special interview article coming soon. As always if you have any feedback or suggestions leave Braixen a private message or visitor message on the forum.
