What You NEED To Know Before Pokemon GO Tour: Johto

To catch ’em all in Johto, takes preparation. Do you have what it takes?

The latest and greatest event, Pokemon GO Tour: Johto, is coming up quick. If you didn’t partake in last year’s Kanto event then you may not know what it takes to get ready. I thought I was prepped going into it, I was sorely mistaken. But a lesson learned, is a lesson worth sharing. Remember, you are going to be catching 100 unique Pokémon in one day, that’s no small feat.

Firstly read our previous article. This will give you the majority of the tips you need to make an informed decision on which version you’ll be choosing. I’ll be sharing more recently released information below as well as what I learned from personal experience.

What’s New

Timed Collection Charts

Each hour of the game will have rotating spawns and be based on various areas of the Gold/Silver games. These spawns will correlate to various Collection Charts so you will know what you need and when you have caught them all. Each area will be available twice, so if you don’t finish your chart don’t fret, you will have one more chance. The areas and times are as follows:

  • New Bark Town: 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Violet City: 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • National Park: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Goldenrod City: 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Mt. Silver: 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Kanto Pokémon in Johto?

As we all know several Pokémon from the Kanto Region got new evolutions when Johto came around. So to help you with your evolution Collection Chart (yes that’s a real thing) so Kantonian Pokémon will be appearing all day during the event. Those Pokémon are:

  • Poliwhirl
  • Golbat
  • Gloom
  • Slowpoke
  • Onix
  • Chansey
  • Seadra
  • Scyther
  • Porygon
  • Eevee

Evolve To Get Exclusive Moves

As is common in Community Days and other similar events, evolving certain Pokémon to their final stages will grant them new, sometimes exclusive moves. The Pokemon GO Tour: Johto is no exception. Here a list of those moves for you PVP fans.

  • Evolve Eevee to get an Espeon that knows Last Resort
  • Evolve Eevee to get an Umbreon that knows Last Resort
  • Evolve Bayleef to get a Meganium that knows Frenzy Plant
  • Evolve Quilava to get a Typhlosion that knows Blast Burn
  • Evolve Croconaw to get a Feraligatr that knows Hydro Cannon
  • Evolve Flaaffy to get an Ampharos that knows Dragon Pulse

Music Makes Memories

Throughout the day, look forward to in-game music from famed game director and music producer, Junichi Masuda. Pro tip, charge up those wireless ear buds so you can enjoy the music without disturbing others around you who may not be playing the game.

Pro Tips
I’ve mentioned this before but I cannot stress it enough, clear out your Pokémon storage. if you don’t NEED it, toss it. For most of us, competitive player or not, any Pokémon with two stars or less is useless. It won’t make it into a battle team, you won’t put it into a Gym. So unless it is special for some other reason, toss it. Once you’ve done that, buy a little more storage space. (This goes for Item Storage too. I filled up real quickly due to challenge rewards and was unable to spin stops for the majority of the Kanto Event)

The spawns during these events are fast and frequent and you will find yourself needing to stop to transfer more often than not. I use a saved search function to quickly transfer everything I caught recently that I don’t need, and you should too.

That search I use is: “age0&!4*&!3*&!shiny” This will show you everything you have caught in the last 24 hours, that is two star or less and not shiny. From there you can select all and mass transfer.

*Disclamer: make sure you have completed any necessary evolutions before doing this. I had made that mistake last year by transferring an Ekans and not having any spare ones to evolve.

Know your phone’s battery power. As our phones get older, the battery seems to drain quicker. And if you are outside in the cold, that will also take a toll on battery life. If you have an older phone, consider an indoor venue such as a mall. Not only will you get more life out of your phone, but they often have outlets where you can stop for a quick recharge. If indoors is not an option for you, bring along a portable charger.

*Note for parents: if you have younger children who want to play, you might need to hotspot their device. This will cause your phone battery to drain extremely quick. Especially if your phone is a couple years old. A portable charger is a MUST for you. (Again, it happened to me, and I don’t wish that pain on anyone.)

Insider Pro Tip
According to Data Miners, there might be one more surprise that Ninatic is keeping from us. We have rumor to believe that the Legendary Pokémon: Raikou, Entei, and Suicune may be roaming in the wild.

But there is a catch. (see what I did there?) They have an extremely high flee rate. Almost 100%. This is a great nod to the original games where you had you track down the roaming Legendary Beasts. So what’s the point of this? Well apparently if you can get a snapshot, something will happen! But you didn’t hear that from me okay. Please keep in mind this is only speculation and may not come to fruition, but if it does…oh boy!

Have a great Saturday, and as always,

See you around, Genesect!
