Deck Breakdown
You may be asking when was M Tyranitar EX great? Nobody was using M Tyranitar EX when it first came out. Surely people tried and I was one of them. Though if you are asking these question then clearly you weren’t paying attention close enough at the time when Ancient Origins came out. That is because M Tyranitar EX was great in our heads! It just that we all realized M Tyranitar EX was pretty bad due to slow set up.

So what makes things better now? We have plenty of brand new cards in the format while some cards have been rotated out. The game has slowed down thanks to the rotation of certain cards which gives you time to set up a M Tyranitar EX to reign like the great king that he is.

YveltalThe main focus of this deck is to get damage on your opponent’s Pokemon while getting M Tyranitar EX ready to attack. This may seem like a daunting task but it is much easier then you think.

Lets focus on powering up M Tyranitar EX. This mightily Pokemon has an attack call Destroyer King which does 110 damage plus 60 more for each damage counter on your opponent’s active Pokemon. You can do some major damage if your opponent’s active Pokemon is covered in damage counters. The problem with this attack is that it cost four energy: two Darkness and two Colorless energy. That is a hefty cost for a hefty Pokemon.

Destroyer King’s attack cost isn’t as hard to power up as you think. This could be a three energy card attachment if you play your cards right. All you need to do is attach two Darkness energy and a Double Colorless Energy to M Tyranitar EX to get the big guy going to destroy some nearby city.

Though, we need to go fast. That is why this deck has plenty of options to do that.

The first option is to use Yveltal’s Oblivion Wing attack. This attack will end up doing damage to your opponent’s active Pokemon while also accelerate energy on to M Tyranitar EX. You will need to get Darkness energy into the discard pile which isn’t hard with cards like Ultra Ball and Professor Sycamore. This deck doesn’t mind discard Darkness energy because you have ways like Yveltal’s Oblivion Wing to pull them out and attach them to M Tyranitar EX. Yveltal’s attack also has an additional benefit because you can start putting damage on your opponent’s active Pokemon. If you keep using Oblivion Wing then that is 30 damage on your opponent’s Pokemon which can be used later once M Tyranitar takes the active position to make a powerful Destroyer King.

Mega TurboYour second way to get energy on M Tyranitar EX is to use Mega Turbo. Earlier we mention that you will want to discard Darkness energy to later retrieve it with Yveltal’s Oblivion Wing. The other reason why you want to discard Darkness energy is so you can use it to get energy on M Tyranitar EX by using Mega Turbo. You can do this early game once you have Mega Evolve your Tyranitar EX into M Tyanitar EX or in the late game to power up a second one. Either way, Mega Turbo can get a M Tyranitar EX going from zero to 110 in a matter of minutes. All you need is a DCE after using two Mega Turbo in a single turn to get M Tyranitar EX ready to attack.

Now lets talk about getting damage on your opponent’s Pokemon so you can deal huge damage with M Tyranitar EX’s Destroyer King. It was mention before that you can use Yveltal’s Oblivion Wing attack to put damage on your opponent’s Pokemon. You will need to do this on your first attacking turn so you can later knock that Pokemon out using M Tyrantar EX. Though you need to find a way to put damage on your opponent’s bench.

That is why you are using three copies of Team Magma’s Secret Base. This Stadium puts two damage counters on each Pokemon put into play that doesn’t have Team Magma in their name. This was a play that was stolen from the Gyarados deck that did well at Florida Regionals in order to put damage on their Magikarp. Instead, we are doing this to put damage on your opponent’s benched Pokemon. That way any Pokemon your opponent puts on their bench is a future target for M Tyranitar EX’s rampage.

Team Magma Secret BaseYou will want to put Team Magma’s Secret Base as soon as possible which means you will want to go first and get it in your opening hand. That way your opponent will be wary to use that first Ultra Ball to grab Hoopa and flood their bench with EX Pokemon. They will need to play their Stadium before they lay down their Pokemon unless they want 230 damage done to them later. By the way, there isn’t many things that can take 230 damage on top of the 20 damage they already have.

A few other cards that have been included in the list was Trainer’s Mail to help grab anything you may need. This could be a Tyranitar Spirit Link to put on your Tyranitar EX. Maybe a Team Magma’s Secret Base so you can start putting damage on your opponent’s bench. Maybe a Professor Sycamore to dump your hand of Darkness energy for a new hand.

Float Stone is included in this deck so you can attach to Yveltal so you can get your M Tyranitar EX into the active once it is ready to attack. You can also use it as pivot switch after somebody has been knocked out. If you need a quick escape then there are two Switch in the deck. The ability to switch between your Pokemon is important as you may need to swap to a Yveltal after a M Tyranitar EX rampage because your opponent put in a Pokemon with no damage on it into the active.

M Tyanitar EX has an interesting trait to it in the form of the Theta Double ancient trait. This trait allows M Tyranitar EX to have two Tools attached to it. One of those Tools will most likely be Tyranitar Spirit Link so your turn won’t end upon Mega Evolving. You can also put a Float Stone on M Tyranitar EX to get out of the active if needed or wanted. Though if you want to help M Tyanitar EX live even longer then Assault Vest is the tool that you want on the big beast.

Assault VestAssault Vest lowers the damage from your opponent’s Pokemon by 40 if that Pokemon has a special energy attached to them. That could make M Tyranitar EX’s 240 HP a pretty daunting task to bring down. Your opponent needs to work extra hard to bring down M Tyranitar or to set up their Pokemon without a special energy card like DCE. Trust me, there are a lot of decks who love to use DCE. Decks like M Mewtwo EX and Yveltal who love their Double Colorless energy and to prey on high energy attackers like M Tyranitar will find themselves in a crunch when they find out that their DCE cost them a knockout on M Tyranitar EX wearing an Assault Vest.

If you are going to be playing this deck then you need to think a little before you attack. The dream scenario involves you going first to put down your Team Magma’s Secret Base after you play down your Tyranitar EX. Then you wait a few turns as you watch your opponent putting down Pokemon because they can’t bump your Magma Base. Your third turn will come and M Tyranitar EX has all the energy he needs to start taking down your opponent’s Pokemon until you pick up six prizes.

In reality, you may end up getting a few of those things by your third turn and that isn’t bad. M Tyranitar EX makes a great comeback. You can fall behind in set up because once you do set up then things are going to go down fast. It may take you three to five turns to get M Tyranitar EX going but during those turns you can do some major set up on your opponent’s Pokemon.

Some of this set up includes putting damage on your opponent’s Pokemon by using Yveltal and Lysandre. Simply pull up a Pokemon that your opponent put down before your Secret Base came down that avoided damage and is getting set up. Hit it with Yveltal’s Oblivion Wing. That way when M Tyranitar EX is ready to attack then you can destroy it!

LysandreThere are times when you may not be able to get Magma Base on the field before your opponent’s floods their bench. That is when you need to take some well planned knock outs. Your Yveltal will become even more important as you use Oblivion Wing to power up M Tyranitar EX. It will also be used to set up future knockouts. That way your opponent will be in a tight spot when their attackers have damage because of your Yveltal’s attack and your M Tyranitar has plenty of HP to take hits and knockouts.

This deck does have some difficult matchups. The first one involves anything that heals itself. This basically means anything that plays Rough Seas. They can clean away any damage you do with Yveltal and Magma Base in just one turn. If you want to battle this deck then the best thing you can do is set up damage using Tyranitar EX’s Hammer In attack that does 60 damage and then next turn attack by using M Tyranitar EX’s Destroyer King by using whatever damage that is left after your opponent’s Rough Seas. The problem is that you have to sset up both a Tyranitar EX and M Tyranitar EX which can be hard and the strategy is clunky at best.

Giratina EX can pose some trouble for M Tyranitar EX. This Pokemon has the Renegade Pulse ability which prevents Mega Pokemon from hurting it. Though this deck has a Hex Maniac to prevent Giratina EX from going renegade on it.

Rough SeasIf you want another option to handle Giratina EX then you could replace a Yveltal with Yveltal EX. This big bird would love to tear down Giratina EX with Evil Ball powered by a Darkness and DCE. You will need to get Yveltal EX down as soon as you see Giratina EX in order to power it up. Though it will hit Giratina EX hard. It can also be a handy second attacker that can power up Tyranitar EX by using Y Cyclone to move a Double Colorless Energy on to M Tyranitar EX. That way energy isn’t wasted and you are putting down down.

M Tyranitar EX and this deck can be impressive but you will need to learn how to play it. This deck will take time to master as you learn how to set up your field and M Tyranitar EX. You will fall behind in the early game but if you stay true to your mission by putting damage on the field with Yveltal and setting up M Tyranitar EX then you will catch up quickly. This deck doesn’t mind having a Yveltal fall because it will simply come back hard with M Tyranitar EX. Your opponent will be taking a knock out but their Pokemon will be taking damage. That is great because M Tyranitar EX will come in and use that damage to serve a huge blow by using Destroyer King. If you also include the damage caused from Magma Base and some well timed Lysandre then M Tyranitar EX can clean house and get you a win. It all just depends on how well you play your deck.

If you are wanting a deck that will surprise your opponent and cause some heavy damage then give M Tyranitar EX a try. This deck is surprising fun and can take knockouts. You just need to plan your campaign correctly and strike when the moment is hot. If you play your cards right then your can have a reign of destruction and make M Tyranitar EX great again!
